Matt Medved is a writer, photographer and musician. He holds a bachelors degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, where he majored in journalism, minored in political science  and had a concentration in creative writing. He is currently pursuing joint Juris Doctor and Master of Arts degrees in International Law and International Affairs at the George Washington University in Washington, DC.

In 2007, Matt worked for the Cape Argus newspaper in Cape Town, South Africa where he broke numerous front page news stories on topics including gangsterism in primary schools and a plot by Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe to implicate his rival Archbishop Pius Ncube in an illicit affair via a sting interview conducted by one of Mugabe’s relatives who worked for the SABC.

During this period, Matt also reported from Swaziland, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe in the forms of narrative features and photographs. Matt has also provided in-depth coverage of South African street children and prison gangsters.

Matt returned to South Africa and Zimbabwe in March 2008 after being awarded the Eric Lund Reporting and Research Grant to pursue a project on South African prison gangs. Matt traveled to Harare in the wake of the controversial Zimbabwean presidential elections and covered the aftermath in a feature freelanced to The Zimbabwean.

After graduating from Northwestern in 2008, Matt worked for The Tennessean newspaper in Nashville, TN covering local news including the plight of Hurricane Gustav evacuees, a probe into the Tennessee Highway Patrol and the 2008 US presidential election.

Matt left the United States in October 2008 and spent a year teaching English at Pungmu Middle School just outside Seoul, South Korea. During this year, Matt contributed freelance coverage to the Seoul Times and traveled to Japan, India, Nepal and Malaysia.

Following the expiration of his teaching contract, Matt flew to Beijing and spent a month traveling through China, Vietnam and Cambodia before flying down to Melbourne, Australia to accept a job at the Australasian Promotional Products Association. He worked there until July 2010, when he finally returned to the United States to return to school
