A man is missing and presumed drowned at Skuinsbank, between the Kaaiman’s River mouth and Victoria Bay along the Cape south coast after he was swept out to sea while fishing.

Conrad Kabb, 35, had been fishing from the rocks yesterday with two young boys and a young girl.

Witnesses had watched helplessly as the man was swept off the rocks, said NSRI Wilderness Station Commander Hennie Niehaus.

A “full-scale shore and sea search and rescue operations revealed no sign of the angler”, he said. The search had resumed at first light today.

“The victim, reported to be a strong swimmer, swam towards and into the Kaaiman’s River mouth in an attempt to get himself to shore but on three occasions was swept back out to sea by the strong rip currents,” said Niehaus.

Niehaus said the family of the missing man were receiving trauma counselling.

He said rescue services had been alerted “quite some time after the incident as it appears that no one on the scene had communications devices”.

The NSRI has appealed to anglers fishing from the shore or wading to wear life jackets.
