An American exchange student studying at the UCT was killed on Sunday and another was injured in a car accident during a guided tour in Palapye, Botswana.

Andrea Sperka, in her early twenties, a senior from the University of Wisconsin Madison, died at the scene.

Marissa Mann, a Tufts University student enrolled at UCT through the State University of New York, Albany, was injured and taken to Gaborone Hospital.

The accident reportedly occurred at 3am when their tour vehicle swerved to avoid a stalled truck and rolled over.

Sperka was a double major in sociology and legal studies.

“On behalf of the entire community of the University of Cape Town, I extend my sincere condolences to the family and friends of the student, as well as to the community of the University of Wisconsin Madison,” said vice-chancellor and principal Njabulo Ndebele.

He said the university had offered support and counselling through its International Academic Programmes Office to friends and other students.
